英語はフレンドリーで大げさに話す言語というイメージを持つ人は多いと思います。極端にいうと繊細さに欠けると思っている人も多いのではないでしょうか。
また英語の別のイメージとして、なまりのないきれいな英語を話すべきと考えている方も多いのではないでしょうか。
外国人たちと仕事をして実感するのは、英語にも日本語と変わらず、たくさんの敬語・丁寧語があるということです。グローバルな環境で働くうえで、敬語や丁寧語をうまく使いこなせないことは死活問題です。

会話に入れない、会議で発言できないなどの原因の１つは、そもそも意見や自分の考えを持っていないことですよね。
話したいことがあれば、もっと真剣に伝えようとする。
発音など表面的なこと以上に、本質的で大切なことがあります。敬語や丁寧語をうまく活用し、相手への敬意と気遣いを示すといった、英語を使ったコミュニケーションが求められる - As a native English speaker, I can say I have had the same experience when speaking Japanese.
I don’t have perfect Japanese. I taught Business Japanese for 7 years at Utah Valley University and challenged the students to speak in Japanese and put aside their pride of trying to speak in perfect sentences. Many of the students had lived in Japan for at least two years speaking every day Japanese. But, when they came into an environment trying to use business terms in a conversation, this was a new challenge for them.
One important study during the semester was switching between polite language and language you speak to a friend or team mate at the same level. In my experience, I share the same opinion as the author; it doesn’t have to be perfect, when you use polite phrases in Japanese, native Japanese people appreciate your effort to be polite and they will lend you their trust and respect.
